In phase 2, the project begins to accelerate as interior and exterior blueprints are developed. A key input to the design process is determining the number and size of operating rooms and ensuring sterile processing and storage areas are sized appropriately to support the volumes and case types. The number of pre and post op bays is regulated by the state and accrediting body standards and is based upon the number of operating rooms and types of procedures being performed.

Plan for the future
During this phase it is critical to strategically plan for future growth. An inadequate sterile processing department can limit capacity and the ability to bring on new specialties. Not enough storage space can create a challenging work environment for staff. A bigger footprint will allow for greater flexibility in the future.
Multi-specialty surgery centers will require more storage than single specialty surgery centers due to the increase in instrumentation needs. Operational complexity increases as specialties are added.
