Certificate of Occupancy
After all building inspections have been successfully completed, the Certificate of Occupancy is granted. This certifies that the facility is in compliance with all building codes and regulations and that it is suitable for occupancy. The facility is officially handed off from the general contractor to the owners. The building is cleaned, and the remaining pieces of Stryker capital equipment including furniture, beds and stretchers, orthopaedic power instrumentation and video equipment are delivered, unpacked and set-up.
Milestones:
Hiring staff
Hiring core staff is a critical step to ensure that a cohesive team is in place to assist with preparations for first cases and upcoming accreditation audits. Core staff includes the following positions:
The Surgical Tech will assemble all instrument sets and provide guidance on consumable order quantities based on preference cards. The Materials Manager will place stocking orders for consumables and ensure that all items are put into inventory. The Sterile Processing Lead will ensure that all sterilization equipment is certified. Once complete, instrument sets can be sterilized and stored.
The Nurse Manager will partner with IT to ensure all workstations are set up and functioning and that all operating rooms are stocked. This role will also recruit for pre-op nurses and establish training plans.
Test cases
For new surgery centers, 10 test cases will need to be determined and scheduled for the upcoming accreditation audit. This requirement may not be necessary for existing entities that are moving locations. Test cases cannot be billed to insurance or Medicare and are typically completed free of charge as part of the accreditation process.
Stryker expertise
Ribbon cutting ceremony
A ribbon cutting ceremony, or grand opening event, is often held prior to first cases. Holding this type of event prior to being operational prevents disruption to patients and allows for tours of the facility before it is a sterile environment.
This is a great opportunity to connect with the community and introduce the new surgery center for the first time, and to educate on the cutting-edge technologies that will be used within the facility. This is an important step for starting to build brand awareness with potential patients and referring physicians. Stryker can share grand opening best practices and provide educational technology demonstrations at the event.

Marketing your practice
When opening a surgery center, visibility is key. For most patients, nearly all searches for healthcare begin online. It is essential to have and actively manage a robust digital presence including an easy to navigate website and engaging social media accounts. These are great channels for reaching referring physicians as well as potential patients.
Co-marketing
Stryker has co-marketing resources readily available and can provide access to pre-made templates to make the development and deployment of a custom campaign easy and cost effective.
"For a new surgery center that is starting up, it’s so important to establish your brand and your identity."
