As a surgeon, the tools and equipment I use every day matter immensely—not just for the success of the procedures I perform but also for my comfort and concentration. Reflecting on my journey, I realize how critical it is to have the right gear, especially something as seemingly simple yet essential as a helmet.

I began my career as an engineer in Michigan, a role that I was passionate about, but I quickly recognized a deeper calling—to help people directly. This realization motivated me to return to school, leading to a new chapter in my professional life. After a decade away, I started my training in private practice in Flint, MI. When I arrived, I was met with an array of surgical helmets that left much to be desired.

The helmet I was given was a heavy, bulky model that seemed outdated. The complaints were unanimous among my colleagues: nurses frequently expressed discomfort, and as for me, my neck ached after long procedures. Thankfully, the hospital I worked for cared about my well-being; when I expressed my needs, they provided me with my own Stryker helmet. This single change made a drastic difference in my daily operations and overall comfort.

Wearing my Stryker helmet was transformative. When I was focused on the task at hand during surgeries, I no longer had to contend with the pain of a heavy helmet pressing down on my neck or the frustrations of awkward lighting. As it turned out, one small detail—good lighting—was critical too. The centered light in the helmet, which shines brighter than other helmets I’ve worn, made it easier to see during procedures, especially in older hospitals where lighting can be sporadic.

For me, a simple feature—the PeelAway Shield—plays a significant role. Since I am just five feet tall, this feature became necessary as I was closer to the action. While taller surgeons might find it less impactful, for me, it meant being able to see my work clearly without straining.

Over time, I noticed my colleagues began to adopt Stryker helmets as soon as they saw how much easier my procedures were running because of them. In our high-stress environment where we often wore these helmets for 8–10 hours a day, little details had a profound impact on our performance. If you’re dealing with discomfort due to inadequate equipment, it can hinder your focus, leading to potential mistakes during critical moments.

I also wanted to shed light on some personal experiences that revealed the importance of comfort and aesthetics in our field. As a female surgeon in a predominantly male space, feedback from fellow residents highlighted the unique challenges we face. One of my residents shared a humorous yet frustrating anecdote about rushing to fix her hair before scrubbing in. These scenarios may seem trivial, but they underscore how the right equipment can help us navigate the dual pressures of professionalism and personal comfort more effectively.

As we move forward, it’s vital for medical equipment manufacturers to consider the diverse needs of all surgical staff. I’ve seen how thoughtful design can dramatically enhance performance and well-being in the operating room. Innovations like Stryker’s Steri-Shield 8 go beyond functionality; they embody a commitment to the health and comfort of those who wear them.
