AI-enabled sensors can play an important role in smart hospital initiatives, alongside workflow redesign, system integration and change management. Yet sensors alone can’t make a smart hospital. Sensors can collect and interpret data and surface insights. But without interoperability, those insights may not reach the teams and workflows that support coordinated, connected care.
What matters in practice is whether insights move reliably into clinical workflows, reach the right role without added friction and support standardized care processes. That takes a connected platform that helps teams coordinate care, stay in sync and use insights in meaningful ways – making it easier to reduce variation, strengthen consistency and support the kind of care teams want to provide.
Smart hospital technology goes beyond sensors alone. In a smart hospital, digital technologies – not just sensors, but also AI, the internet of medical things and data analytics – are integrated so devices, systems and data work together.1,2 For clinical leaders, “smart” should translate into safer care, fewer avoidable interruptions, better throughput and a more predictable patient journey from intake through discharge – with less friction for nurses and care teams. Effective data exchange supports coordinated care; without it, fragmented information, care delays and rising administrative costs can affect outcomes.9
