On January 8, 2025, Finn Whittacre had just returned to school after winter break. It was a typical day in class when, suddenly, everything changed—Finn collapsed. Their teacher immediately called for help. What was initially thought to be a seizure quickly worsened as Finn started gasping for air. When the fire department arrived, first responders recognised Finn was experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest, and began chest compressions and used a nearby AED located inside the school. After delivering a shock, a LIFEPAK 35 monitor/defibrillator was attached to continue care and monitor Finn’s heart rhythm. The defibrillation helped restore a normal heartbeat. Finn was transported to the hospital, where they were later diagnosed with catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT), a rare inherited heart condition. Finn’s story is a powerful testament to survival and a reminder of the importance of trained responders and accessible AEDs. Their quick action, combined with the right tools nearby, helped save Finn’s life.
