VariAx 2® Distal Radius
and VariAx 2® Distal Ulna

Variable Angle Locking Plate System
VariAx 2 Distal Radius
The VariAx 2 Distal Radius and VariAx 2 Distal Ulna Plating Systems provide you with a comprehensive range of anatomic plating options that work with a common instrument and screw platform. Plates utilize SmartLock technology which permits polyaxial screw placement. You can angle locking screws up to 15˚ in each direction for a total range of 30˚ providing you with the flexibility to position screws based on the patient, not a plate’s pre-existing design.

Dorsal and Fragment Specific Plates

Standard Dorsal Plate:

  • SOMA designed1
  • Designed to buttress the dorsal rim
  • 2mm thickness
  • Styloid screw hole that can be bent if desired to patient’s need
  • Low profile and flush screws to reduce the potential for soft tissue irritation
  • Buttressing of the complete dorsal rim
  • Pre-angulated divergent screw trajectories distally

Lateral Plate:

  • SOMA designed1
  • 2mm thickness
  • Distal K-wire holes allow for additional small additional small fragment fixation using paper-clip technique
  • Slightly curved to improve fit2
  • Distal kickstand screw trajectory designed for better stability

Dorsal Medial Plate:

  • SOMA designed1
  • 2mm thickness, 0.75mm distal taper thickness
  • Sits medial to Lister’s Tubercle
  • Distal K-wire holes allow for additional small fragment fixation using paper-clip technique
  • Designed to buttress the lunate facet

Dorsal Lateral Plate:

  • SOMA designed1
  • Oblong hole designed to facilitate plate placement
  • 2mm thickness, 0.75mm distal taper thickness
  • Sits lateral to Lister’s Tubercle
  • Distal K-wire holes allow for additional small fragment fixation using paper-clip technique

Volar Rim Plate:

  • SOMA designed1
  • 1.6mm thickness, 1.0mm distal taper thickness
  • The vertical K-wire slots are designed to allow for distal or proximal adjustment and the horizontal K-wire slots are designed to allow for lateral or medial adjustment of the plate.
  • Sits on volar lip at the lunate facet
  • Hooks to grab small distal fragments, which cannot be fixed with screws
  • K-wire holes on the volar rim plate allow for tissue approximation with sutures
  • Hooks to capture lunate facet

Distal Ulna Hook Plate:

  • SOMA designed using 251 ulnae CT scans2
  • 1.5mm thickness
  • Distal hook allows for fragment reduction by K-wire prior to plate fixation and plate can be slid over K-wire for final reduction
  • Hook designed to capture small styloid fractures that may not be captured by screws

Distal Ulna Base Plate:

  • SOMA designed using 251 ulnae CT scans2
  • 1.7mm thickness
  • Distal screw cluster offers more fixation options in a narrow footprint

Wrist Spanning Plate:

  • Proximal oblong hole designed for plate adjustment
  • 3mm thickness
  • Offered in 2 lengths
  • Tapered ends designed to help slide the plate through the extensor tendon compartments (ETC)

SOMA® Designed

Only by truly understanding the challenges you face can we offer a portfolio to best fit your needs. With anatomically contoured plates designed or validated using our proprietary SOMA technology, streamlined instrumentation, and trained representatives, our plating portfolio is designed with you in mind.

SOMA Designed

Our plating portfolio ranges from indication specific plates and patented Smartlock technology to streamlined instrumentation for ease-of-use in the OR. Helping to solve  complicated fractures with simple innovative solutions – Plating that fits.

Stryker Orthopaedic Modeling and Analytics, or SOMA, consists of a database of over 37,000 3D bones generated from CT scans of patients3. This comprehensive database and proprietary software helps design a better fitting implant and allows for true evidence based design.

Screw Options

The VariAx 2 screws allow for ±15 degrees of angulation. A lip on the drill sleeve will engage and allow toggling in the hole. The range in which the drill guide toggles will create a 30-degree cone and every angle in  this range will be a locking position. This may allow the surgeon to aim where the screw / peg should be placed. Also, depending on the placement of the plate, there may be a need to angle a screw/ peg out of the fracture line. The 2.0mm drill guide for T8 screws facilitates drilling a 2.0mm pilot hole for a 2.4 or 2.7mm T8 screw or a 2.0mm peg centrically for locking or non-locking screws.

XXL Plating Options

XXL Plating Options:

There are sixteen additional plates in 74mm (5 hole), 100mm (8 hole), 145mm (11 hole) and 189mm (15 hole) lengths, standard and narrow widths, and in left and right anatomic shapes. These plates are pre-curved to fit the radial bow. The stronger plate design includes a smooth transition from 2 to 3mm at the meta-diaphyseal intersection of the plate. The pre-angled screw holes in the distal part of the plate and Z-shaped screw hole configuration in the shaft allow for additional flexibility in fracture fixation. The higher profile plate design allows for fixation in osteotomies, mal-unions and non-unions.
