On November 28, 2007, Stryker Instruments and OR-Live assembled a dynamic panel of researchers, anesthesia professionals and a patient/advocate at a forum for healthcare journalists to discuss the complex issue of anesthesia awareness. Anesthesia awareness is a rare – but real – risk of surgery that occurs when a patient under general anesthesia stays or becomes conscious during surgery but can’t move or talk because paralytics are in effect.
The goal of the forum, “A Wakeup Call About Anesthesia Awareness: Striking a Balance in Public Perceptions,” was to provide a responsible, balanced dialog in this time of increased attention to this topic. The forum addressed the range of related challenges, controversies and concerns and sought to forge a positive path ahead to reduce anesthesia awareness and improve patient safety.
Stryker Instruments and OR-Live launched an educational portal with information on the issue of anesthesia awareness. Among many unique materials, the portal includes the following:
- A full webcast of the forum
- PRO-Active Patient Preparedness Tool: Guide to Getting PRO-Active as You Approach Surgery with Anesthesia
- Snap II Level of Consciousness Monitor: A Brief Video Demonstration
As the maker of the innovative Snap II, a new option in level of consciousness monitoring that is used in addition to standard methods of anesthesia control to measure a patient’s brain activity level during surgery, Stryker is dedicated to innovation, precision and the most advanced technology to complement standard anesthesia control monitoring.
